Activities & adventures

A year of adventure and traditions

From campfires to race tracks to ballparks — Pack 79 builds the year around annual traditions and recurring adventures that build real skills.

Signature events

Family tents around a fire pit at golden hour with string lights

Family Campouts

Two to three camping trips a year — tent camping, campfires, outdoor cooking, and unforgettable weekends for the whole family. No camping experience required; the Pack helps new families get set up.

Colorful wooden pinewood derby cars lined up on a track

Pinewood Derby

Our biggest event of the year. Scouts design, carve, and paint their own wooden race car, then compete for speed and style on race day.

Nature & Hiking

Nature walks and hikes on Charlotte-area trails, learning to read the woods, spot wildlife, and leave no trace.

Plus, more Pack adventures

Some activities are year-round building blocks; others are annual traditions the whole Pack looks forward to.

Annual & special events

  • Raingutter Regatta

Build a small sailboat and race it down a raingutter, powered only by your own breath — a once-a-year Pack favorite.

  • Charlotte Knights Baseball

A pack night at the ballpark cheering on the Knights — a summer tradition we look forward to each year.

  • Charlotte Checkers Hockey

Bundle up for a group outing to see the Checkers on the ice — an annual winter outing.

Year-round adventures

  • Astronomy Nights

Telescopes, constellations, and the wonder of a Carolina night sky.

  • Biking Adventures

Group rides and bike-safety skills on local greenways.

  • Whittling & Woodcraft

Older Scouts earn their whittling chip and learn safe knife skills.

  • Citizenship & Service

Service projects and flag ceremonies that teach Scouts to give back.

  • Outdoor Skills

Knots, fire safety, map reading, and Leave No Trace principles.

  • Den Adventures

Every den works through its own age-appropriate adventure belt loops throughout the program year.
